Home remedies for cats with liver disease can be used alongside conventional treatments for various types of liver disease to heal the liver. Apart from medication, your cat will need a special diet that supports the healing process.

Diet and supplements

Small, frequent meals, low in fat and containing easily digestible foods are recommended. Often vitamin and mineral supplements are also advised. For example, Small Animal Antioxidant from Thorne combines vitamins A,C, E and selenium with milk thistle, lipoic acid and grape seed extract.

If you want to try herbal supplements, give five dandelion flower stems each day. Cut the stems finely into your cat’s food, making sure the milky sap is not lost. Parsley and wild garlic are also great liver tonic foods.

Herbal remedies

Milk Thistle is an excellent herb for treating liver disease. It contains silymarin (a powerful antioxidant) which can block the entry of toxins into the liver and remove them at cellular level, resulting in regeneration of liver cells and improved liver function.

For hepatitis give a tisane of dandelion roots, speedwell, greater celandine, common club moss, wild chicory flowers and woodruff. To prepare the tea infuse one teaspoon of herbs (and ½ teaspoon of moss) in 150 ml of boiling water for one minute. Give four dropperfuls six times daily.

If your cat suffers from liver cirrhosis apply a compress of Swedish bitters to the affected area for two hours in morning and in the afternoon and a horsetail poultice during the evening and at night. Give three dropperfuls of an agrimony, cleavers, woodruff, dandelion root and speedwell tonic six times daily. To make the tonic follow the instructions above.

For a fatty liver give two dropperfuls of club moss tisane in the morning and three dropperfuls four times daily of the tonic above. In addition, apply a compress of Swedish bitters during the day and club moss compress in a linen bag overnight.
