What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is the most common eye problem in cats. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva of the eye, i.e. the clear membrane that covers the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.
There are a number of causes for conjunctivitis such as household cleaners, pesticides and other harsh chemicals, injury to the eye like cat scratches, or infections. The condition usually causes redness of the eye but your cat may also suffer from weepy eyes or a yellowish discharge which may even cause the eyelids to stick together.
If properly treated, it usually heals quickly without any complications. If left untreated, however, the infection may spread to other areas of the eye and cause visual damage.
Conjunctivitis is conventionally treated by some form of topical ointment or eye drops. Aspirin, corticosteroids, or anti-inflammatory drugs are usually prescribed, and in some cases also a course of topical or oral antibiotics. Antibiotics can decrease your cat’s immune system which may result in recurrent infections.
Home remedies for cats provide an alternative to conventional medication without the undesirable side-effects they may have. They are equally effective and easy to administer.
Chamomile is a great herb to use for all sorts of inflammations. Wash the affected eye regularly with chamomile tea. In addition, place a cool chamomile tea bag over the eye in the morning and evening. The tannin in tea will help sooth itchiness and reduce inflammation.
Herbs such as burdock, rosemary and meadowsweet have also been proven beneficial for eye health. Burdock has superb eye-cleansing, detoxifying and immune boosting properties and is a great home remedy for cats with any sort of eye infection. Rosemary is also very beneficial for cats with conjunctivitis as it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps to relieve pain and soothes the eye. Meadowsweet and Greater celandine can also be used externally to promote healing of the infected eye.
There are ready-made home remedies for cats with conjunctivitis on the market such as Eye-Heal from PetAlive. It contains the above mentioned natural ingredients in an herbal tincture. It is easily administered, just dilute 5 drops in 20 ml of freshly boiled water and leave to cool. Soak a clean cotton swab in the solution and gently wipe the affected from inner to the outer corners. Use new swab for each eye. Repeat up to three times daily, if necessary.
Conjunctivitis is often the result of a weakened immune system and may occur alongside other illnesses such as respiratory infections. In this case, your cat may also need some immune boosting supplements. Suitable herbal supplements include garlic and watercress. Shred the herbs finely before feeding in honey pills.
Using home remedies for cats will help to heal conjunctivitis quickly and effectively and you don’t have to worry about harmful side-effects.
